Performance

Why the Armada

The Armada is our freestyle and big air twin tip, and everything about it points at one moment: the second you edge hard against the kite and the board sends you. The flat centre section builds the speed you need going into it. The kicked tips load as you carve, hold the tension, and release it all at once. Carbon runs along the line the load actually travels, so that snap is the same in your hundredth session as it was in your first.

Pop

Three stages of rocker: flat through the middle to keep your speed up, kicked at both ends to load and fire. Edge into it and the board pushes back rather than washing out, which is the difference between a jump you are riding and one that is happening to you.

Bottom

The base is not flat. A concave running through it channels water out to the rails, which does two things you feel immediately: it gets you planing earlier than the wind should allow, and it gives the rails something to bite into so you hold a hard line upwind. On a marginal day that is the difference between riding and swimming. On a good day it means you finish the session where you started it, instead of walking back up the beach with your board under your arm.

Landings

Pop is easy to sell; coming down is what decides whether you go again. The Paulownia core flexes rather than slamming, 3D shock absorbers sit under the pads and take the sting out of chop and hard landings, and ABS box rails wrap the core to absorb the impacts that finish most boards — the shorebreak, the rocks, the baggage handlers. It means a four-hour session ends because the wind dropped, not because your knees did.

01 — Deck latticeGeometric grid moulded into the deck. It spreads the load from the straps out across the whole board instead of concentrating it under your feet, and stiffens the panel without adding a gram. 02 — Insert platesTwo four-bolt patterns and the handle, bedded into the lattice so the pull of a strap is carried by the grid, not by four screw holes. 03 — Perimeter railABS band running the full outline, deck to base, both sides and both tips. One continuous piece — nothing to split at a join. 04 — Twin channelsTwo parallel rails run the length of the base. They hold a line like a second set of edges, so the board tracks straight and drives upwind between turns. 05 — ConcaveBetween the channels the base is dished. Water is pushed out to the rails, which is what gets the board planing early. 06 — G10 finsFour fins at the corners, outboard of the channels, biting where the rail already carries the load. 07 — Rail in sectionAt true thickness the rail is most of the edge the board has. It seals the core and takes every impact the tips do not. 08 — Paulownia coreWrapped on all sides. The channels are formed in the base laminate over it, not cut into the wood.

Handmade in Tarifa 01 / 06
Shaping the Armada by hand 01 Hand made Shaped, laminated and finished by hand. A machine cuts the outline; people build the board. The last millimetre of a rail is felt on the water long before it shows on a screen. A handful of boards on the racks 02 No mass production Small runs, built close to order. We are not filling a warehouse or hitting a quota set a year in advance, so nothing gets rushed to make a shipping date. Paulownia core and materials 03 Materials that last Paulownia wood core, green bio-based epoxy through the whole lay-up, ABS hard box rails, G10 fins. Chosen for how they ride and how long they last, not for what they cost us. Final check before packing 04 Time and care A board takes the time it takes. It is checked by hand before it is packed, and if it is not right it does not leave — a decision a person makes here, not a tolerance in a spreadsheet. Boxed in the workshop 05 No middle men Straight from the workshop to you. No distributor, no shop margin stacked on top. Same wood, same hands, fewer people taking a cut — that is the whole reason the price looks like it does. Testing at Los Lances, Tarifa 06 Tested by the people who make it Los Lances is ten minutes from the bench. A board goes out, comes back with a note, and the next one changes that week — not next season. If we have not ridden it, we do not sell it.

More about this edition
01The design

The deck takes the mackerel’s belly — pearl, iridescent. The base takes the dorsal in navy and teal. Where they meet the graphic breaks into burgundy fragments, the moment the surface gives. Hexagonal scales run underneath, and the Artist Series marks and Mane in France signature are drawn into the artwork, not stuck on top.

02How the edition works

Limited in time, not in units: no run size, no numbering. The design sells for a set window and is then retired. Order before 15 August 2027 and you get one; after that it does not come back.

03The board underneath

An Artist Series board is an Armada. Paulownia core, green epoxy, ABS hard box rails, twin channels, four G10 fins, Prime pads and straps. The artwork is limited, the build is not.

04Sizes & other shapes

All six Armada sizes, 131×40 to 144×45, artwork scaled to each rather than cropped. Ask and we will put it on a Spin or a Breeze instead — same window, same price.

05Ordering & production

Three to four weeks, printed in HD and finished by hand in Tarifa. Wherever the artwork runs light you see the grain of the core through it — Michaël designed with that in mind.

06The artist, and what is next

Michaël Gatt works as Mane in France, our Artist in Residence, and takes commissions from 450 €. A second board of his lands on 20 August.

Armada — questions Built to order in Tarifa
Everything people ask before they order. If your question is not here, write to us. A person in the workshop answers, usually the same day.
01Ordering & delivery
How long does it take?

Three to four weeks. Every board is built to order in Tarifa — there is no warehouse of finished boards to pull from, which is the same reason yours can be exactly the size and design you want. Custom artwork does not add to that time, but you approve a proof first, so the clock starts when you say yes to it.

Why not next-day, like the big brands?

Because they are shipping something made months ago in a container. Ours is shaped, laminated, printed and finished after you order it, by hand, in small numbers. Three weeks is what that takes, and it is the reason there is no distributor margin on the price.

Where do you ship?

Worldwide, tracked, from the workshop. Shipping is calculated at checkout and there is no middle man in between — the board leaves the same building it was built in.

Can I collect it in Tarifa?

Yes. Tell us when you order and we will have it ready. If the wind is on, bring a kite — the water is ten minutes from the bench and someone will usually come out with you.

02Personalising your board
Can I put my own artwork on it?

Yes, on any shape and any size. Send us the file, we print it in HD onto the deck, and you get a board nobody else has. It is 100 € on top of the board price when the design is your own rather than one of the stock graphics from the site.

What file do you need?

A rectangular canvas of 165 × 65 cm at 300 dpi at final size. That covers the whole board with margin to spare. Anything smaller or lower resolution will show on the deck once it is printed at full scale.

What works and what does not?

Avoid very dark colours, and avoid the colours of the water — a blue-green board disappears the moment you drop it. Avoid hard outlines that trace the shape of the board: each one is finished by hand and the print can move slightly with the resin, so an edge that is meant to follow the rail will not sit where you drew it. Lighter, looser, more abstract artwork always prints better than something solid and precise.

What happens to white areas?

They show the wood. The core is Paulownia and the print sits over it, so wherever your design is white or very light you will see grain coming through. Plenty of people design for that on purpose.

Do I see it before it is made?

Always. We send you a revision of the design on the board before anything goes into production, and we will tell you honestly if something in the file is going to print badly. Unusual requests get looked at case by case.

What finish will it have?

Twin tips come out matt. Our surfboards are the glossier, more saturated ones — worth knowing if you have seen a colour on a directional and expect it to look identical on an Armada.

Not a designer? No problem. Michaël Gatt — Mane in France, our Artist in Residence — draws custom board graphics professionally. 03Choosing your board
Which size should I take?

Your weight and the wind you usually get. Between two sizes, take the bigger one — a slightly big board in strong wind is easier to ride than a small one in a lull. Tell us your weight, your spot and the kite you ride and we will answer with a size, not a sales pitch.

Is the Armada the right shape for me?

It is our freestyle and big air board: most pop, most edge grip, best in flat water and happy up to 40 knots and beyond. If you mostly cruise and want speed, look at the Spin. If you are learning, or your spot is light, the Breeze will do more for you.

Can a beginner ride it?

Yes. It is built for freestyle but the flex and the concave make it forgiving, and people learn on them. Take a bigger size than you think and it will be easier again.

What comes with the board?

Just the board, but you can include the Prime pads and straps mounted and ready, the grab handle, and four G10 fins with their screws and washers.

Will boots fit?

Yes, the same stainless inserts take pads, booties or boots. The stance is adjustable on the inserts too, so you can move it in or out without new hardware.

04After you have it
What if it is not the right board?

Ride it and send it back within 35 days if it is not for you. Getting it wet is the point — a board you never took out tells you nothing. Custom-printed boards are the exception: they are made for you and cannot be resold, so talk to us before ordering if you are unsure about the size.

What does the warranty cover?

Manufacturing faults. Register the board after delivery and we add six months to it. Damage from riding is not a warranty case — that is what crash replacement is for.

I broke it. Now what?

Send us a photo. If you broke it riding, crash replacement gets you another one at a reduced price. Small things — a rail knock, a stripped insert — we can often repair here rather than replace.

How do I look after it?

Rinse it, and rinse the fin screws in particular. Check the screws every few sessions: a lost fin is always a loose screw. Do not leave it in a hot car for a week — heat is harder on a board than the sea is.

Can I buy spare pads, straps or fins?

Yes, all of it separately. Front and back bases are different parts, and one pad, one strap or one fin can be replaced on its own without touching the rest of the board.
