Kitesurfing World League in Egypte El Gouna

The first stop of the World Kitesurfing League was a great event for all. It took place in the lovely El Gouna, Egypt.

It was my first time in Egypt and I was very impressed with the place. A very warm welcome was given from all of the Egyptians, always so happy to help and make sure we always had a good time. The conditions in El Gouna where great for kiting, warm turquoise water and wind for 9 & 11m kites.

The event kicked off with sun and wind so we could begin with the freestyle trails straight away. I was already pre qualified for this event as last year I finished in the top 7 women for freestyle. Once the trails had been completed the main event took place straight after. My first heat was against Paula Novotna from Czech Republic and Marine Duprat from New Caledonia. I had a good heat landing some nice tricks, I felt like my winter training had paid off. I won the heat by 6 points and advance straight into the 3rd round.

My next heat was against Marine Duprat from New Caledonia again who won her way up into the 3rd round. This time I found the conditions quite challenging, the wind had picked up a lot and became very gusty, the water also got a lot more choppy, it was a close heat but I did’t make it. That was it for day 1 of the competition.

Day 2 started bright and early, first heat of the day was at 7am. So we where all up at 5:30am to prepare! Think I had possibly the worst sleep of my life, an incredibly loud alarm went off in my hotel building in the middle of the night followed by screaming. I was pretty terrified to say the least. I thought it was some sort of terrorist attack!! All these thoughts where going round my head and I couldn’t sleep a wink after it. When my alarm went off at 5:20am I could not believe it! I was totally exhausted and weak, I felt far from top from on the water.

My heat was against Paula Novotna again! Out of all of the girls in the comp it was very strange to be only competing against the same 2 girls. I new I had to be on top form for this heat but I just wasn’t, I lost my heat against Paula and that meant I was out of the competition finishing in 7th place.

An hour after the freestyle finals had taken place the wind totally stopped and unfortunately there was no more wind for the rest of the event so it was not possible to run the Big Air competition. We did enjoy a lot of other things the red sea had to offer though, snorkelling, lots of wake boarding and the general nice atmosphere of El Gouna. I really enjoyed my time in Egypt, I had a fantastic time competing and a super all round Egyptian experience. I’m already looking forward to competing again and hoping I can improve on my 7th place in the next events.
