The Cable Guys: A week out on the wire (By Ryan Evans)
BEST Team Riders Sam Medysky, Joe Ruscito and I have been riding and testing the Profanity for the past five days at the Top Cable Parks in the States. We’ve been able to hit rails/sliders/kickers and take the board into the corners for air tricks
These cable parks have a ton of different obstacles. For rails you want a board with flex for presses. For kickers you want a board with plenty of rocker to soften the landings. For sliders you want a board that allows you to Ollie high (rocker) with clean release from the water (outline/rocker).
For the corners you need a board with heavy bottom shape (fins or molded in fins/channels). This allows you to track against the pull of the cable and release from the water (and into the air) under your own control (the flick).
How the Profanity performed is best summed up by Joe Ruscito’s remarks after his first lap at the cable:
“This board (the profanity) is the best product we’ve made all year! Out of every kite, bar, board, footstrap… this is the best thing we have!”
The rocker on the profanity allowed it to release super clean and you could easily ollie the 2.5ft onto any slider/rail with ease. The flex allowed us to press (and lock-in) to the rail for extra control and steeze.
With a Wakestyle board you are alwasy concertned the flex would prove to be TOO SOFT for the corners (the board flexing too much under the strain of edging against the cable). This wasn’t the case at all… the board, thanks to the channels in the bottom, tracked clean through the corners and the flex didn’t seem to influence your ability to control your speed through the corner.
Landing after hitting big kickers the Profanity will “flatten out” just a little due to the flex, if you are used to landing on a wakeboard with similar rocker and no flex then your landings are going to be a little harder until you get used to coming in more on the back foot. Let’s be honest though, if that’s the trade off for super smooth presses then we are happy to make it.
All-in-all, the board worked great!
We’re meeting up with the Ronix Wake Team to see if we can finally make some real converts out of them. Of course we’ve been videoing everything and it will making its way onto the Best website later this month.
