SuperFly Event Header

The EVENT:

Best Kiteboarding is hosting the 4th annual 2011 SuperFly Open. This spectacular and unique snowkite festival is scheduled for February 18-21st, 2011. The event will take place at Strawberry Reservoir and the surrounding areas around Park City, UT. These areas are some of the best kept secrets for the best snowkiting in the world. Jacob Buzianis our top international snowkite team rider has been coming to this area since the beginning of snowkiting and it has been his home to train. Now, it has become a popular snowkiting destination because of the open areas to snowkite and nearby ski resorts. Park City, The Canyons, and Deer Valley ski resorts are just minutes away.

SuperFly

The SuperFly Open will have something for everyone. Introductory kite clinics, demos, and the opportunity to watch some of the best snowkiters in the world showcase their talent. Launch off snow features prepared with the help of Jacob Buzianis and the snow grooming team. Slide across rails and boxes generously provided by event sponsors. Compete in or watch any of the five competition categories; Freestyle, Wookie's checkpoint challenge, Snowkite Cross, Big Mountain Race and Freeride.

Multi-evening festivities include music, "Wookie's Wild Round-up" bar crawl to Park City, UT (we will all get on one big bus to Park City), hot springs swimming, dining, dancing, awards, and multimedia presentations from some of the greatest athletes in the sport. The SuperFly Open is a sanctioned stop on the NAST Snow Kite Tour in the United States and dubbed as an annual “must hit” snow event for kiters worldwide! Our event will include:

LOCATION:

The areas of Strawberry and Park City, UT have some of the best and biggest areas in Utah to snowkite. These areas offer high elevation, exposure to perfect wind conditions, an abundance of snow, and insane riding areas… something that no other area can. The main riding area and the location for this year’s event will be at the Strawberry snowkite spot, directly off highway 40 just east of Heber City.

Snowkite spot description : Strawberry, Utah

Strawberry is a mountainous area that is below the tree line and offers miles of open Snowkiting terrain that sits along the border of a giant alpine reservoir. Situated between 7500 – 8000 feet elevation, Strawberry receives a good snow pack and holds its conditions well into the spring time. The frozen reservoir itself offers flat riding for all abilities and access into the far reaches of the area. Along the shoreline, there are roadside parking areas that lead to dozens of terrain parks and moderate hill climbing. While a push from the north or south brings better winds, it seems any snowkiter that makes the journey on a windy day will be rewarded. This area offers all levels of terrain and is a great place for honing skills on slopes that are gradual and not too steep. With so much terrain, snow features, mountains to climb up and constant wind… this dream playground is home to Jacob Buzianis and Strawberry is currently considered a local kiters secret spot to the outside world that has not discovered the goodness that is just an hour drive from Salt Lake City.

Snowkiting areas

Strawberry River - A paved parking area on the north side of the road near milepost 37 on Hwy. 40. A great area that funnels Northwest wind. Flat snow leading to terrain in most directions. Starting point for many Triangle routes and XC tours to the Bull Springs area.

Strawberry Marina - Turn-off on West Strawberry Road around milepost 40, to access the terrain on the west side of the reservoir, Strawberry Bay and the Marina Lodge. This is a great place to stay, with riding all around the hotel, leading to every spot in the region.

Chicken Creek West - Just before milepost 42 on Hwy. 40, this is a large parking area on the south side of the highway. Terrain riding and access to the lake are both in reach of this prime location on Strawberry Reservoir.

Jake’s Hill and flat - Between milepost 42 and 43 on the south side of Hwy. 40. Offers fun hills to boost off and the flat with consistent wind to do freestyle tricks. It’s a close reach to the lake.

Chicken Creek East - Just after milepost 42 on Highway 40 is another paved parking area. CC East offers fun hills to session with both lake and land riding.

Gravel Pit/Terrain park - Just off milepost 44 on Hwy. 40 is an amazing playground with terrain for every direction of wind. Just beyond is an old railroad track that presents both quarter pipes and massive half-pipe riding cut out of the landscaping. Parking is limited here, and often accessed from other parking areas.

Ladders - Milepost 45 marks the ladders day use area. Not always plowed, but a good marker for the Gravel Pit area with access to terrain riding.

Overlook - A Parking area along Hwy 40 just after milepost 46. Usually plowed out, this is the staging point for tours across the reservoir and into the narrows section of Strawberry. There is wind formed terrain, gradual slopes and miles of open lake to explore here.

Soldier Creek Bay - Several miles east on Hwy 40, this is the pick up spot for Snowkiters who ride downwind thru the 'Narrows' Of Strawbs.

Lake Creek - Snowkiting Heaven. Snowmobile or Touring Access required to get there. Start from Strawberry River parking lot or Timber lake parking lot. Best with NW, W, SW flow.

Tower Mountain - Snowkite Heaven. Snowmobile or Touring Access required to get there. Expert only. Best with NW, W, S, SW and SE flow. Start from Strawberry River parking lot or Timber lake parking lot.
