RV SUMMER TOUR 2007: The Bus visits Kite Zombies!

One of the most frequently asked questions we hear besides,"So, what's the difference between a Waroo and a Bularoo?" is "So, where you off to next?" It was interesting how many kiteboarders in California were familar with this place called Weed, when there is no kiteboarding in Weed. You think maybe they had been driving up the Interstate one day, seen a sign for Weed, and just had to stop.

Hmmm ...

Well, we found out what kiteboarders in Weed do to ride. They wake up at 6AM and drive five hours to the South Oregon Coast. So, that's just what we did. We picked up Bill Repetto from Kite Zombies and we were on our way. We finally pulled into Boice Cape campgrounds, which overlooks Floras Lake, at 1PM that afternoon.

Floras Lake is a freshwater lake a few hundred yards inland from the ocean, so here you can have your choice: flat water or waves. The local kite zombies are Matt, Kelly and Jason.

Well, "local" meaning they drive a few hours very often, or they set up camp for a couple months in an old transit bus converted to a kitestation, ran on biodiesel. Bill put the word out that we'd be in town so we had a good amount of people show up for the demo. We definately won over a few beginners who were able to stay upwind for the first time on the Waroo, after trying to learn on a C kite.

The wind blew for us our entire stay but, I'll warn you, if it has any East component whatsoever, conditions can be rough! The wind was Northeast and the lake was full of holes and very gusty, so we decided to ride more in the ocean.

The coastline was absolutely beautiful! The marine layer makes it pretty misty, but when that clears to blue skies, you can see the huge rock formations extending out into the sea against a backdrop of jagged cliffs.

As we said our goodbyes and began pulling out of the campground we noticed some wild blackberries bushes and couldn't resist to stop and pick some.

Miguel, picking blackberries ...

So where are we off to next, you ask? That would be, The Gorge!
