RV SUMMER TOUR 2007: Kris Kinn joins the RV

Kris is the very first female to hop on board for the BEST Bus Tour. The following blog is the tour from her perspective...

My first sight of the infamous Best RV was it reversing the wrong way up a one-way street after almost knocking the AC off the roof whilst trying to maneuver under a bridge to pick me up.
I had flown into Newark on a very early morning flight from Buffalo and the guys were picking me up on their way to Long Beach, CT to visit Phil Burke at KiteWise.
We arrived at the beach around noon and met up with Phil and his crew from Kitewise.
The wind was pretty light so we spent some time getting to know everyone. I wasn’t too sure what to expect as a female rider on this tour but, when we arrived, the girls were very excited to talk with me. It’s great to meet other girls who are out there learning, and enjoying the sport. Most of us are few amongst the guys, so to be able to talk about kiting with the girls is refreshing and ultimately inspiring.
The wind finally picked up for us later that afternoon to the high teens and everyone headed to “ the gut”, a slick just downwind from the sound, and there it was handle pass for handle pass between two local riders Paul and Joe. It was great to see so many Best kites in the air.
That night Phil and Karen took great care of us by feeding us and putting us up for the night.
The next day we returned to the beach for a more mellow session with a light wind coming in later allowing us to get out for one more session before heading off to the next stop. Later that night the guys showed me the joys of RV traveling. (Dinner at Mc Donald’s and sleeping in a truckers stop!)

RV SUMMER TOUR 2007: Back on the Road, after Real
- Miguel Willis
Wednesday, June 13, 2007: Exit Real
After a couple of weeks of lodging at Real Kiteboarding, it was time to get the RV back on the road.
Unfortunately, I was solo for the few miles that lay ahead. Gavin, who traveled with me from Jacksonville to Cape Hatteras, claimed he had to do a photo shoot in the Dominican Republic. Personally, I feel this was just an feeble excuse and he’d been lured away by promises of ladies in skimpy bikinis on tropical beaches and fruity rum cocktails with silly umbrellas.
Friday, June 15, 2007: Dewey Beach, Delaware
The next Bus-Stop was H2Air in Dewey Beach, Delaware. We tried various tactics to entice the wind but it wasn’t going to co-operate and could only manage a late afternoon session. So we sat around, pumped a few kites and talked kiting.
Sunday, June 17, 2007: Heading to NJ
From Dewey I continued north to New Jersey, picking up Jake Buzianis, aka "The Snowkiter" who would be joining the RV for the next 2 weeks. Jake has never seen the ocean before because he lives in the mountains and is always surrounded by snow and bears. So the first time he touched the ocean, it was both an exiting and scary time for him. Actually, I just made that up! He spent a lot of time in Maui; so I doubt this is his first time in an ocean. But since I am the author of this blog, I can say whatever I want!
While waiting for wind Jake tried skating with the trainer kite...
With predictable results...
Wednesday, June 20, 2007: New Jersey
Our next voyage takes us to "The Garden State" New Jersey.
Our first stop is at Island Surf and Sail in Brant Beach. Unfortunately, there wasn't any wind. So we had to find something fun to do in the interim. Island Surf and Sail had recently purchased a "Grinch", which is the latest in "no wind" toys. Considering the current wind-less situation, we decided that it was the perfect opportunity to break in the Grinch! We had a blast being towed very fast into waves along the beach!

Hopefully later today if the forecast materializes, we’ll be heading off to the beach for a kite and demo the new kit.

After visiting Island Surf and Sail, our next stop on the RV was with GreenHat Kiteboarding in New Jersey.
One day prior to the schedule demo days with GreenHat Kiteboarding, Miguel and I took a day off of kiteboarding to, uh, go kiteboarding. We had met up with GreenHat's owners, Vadim and Andrey. The four of us kited at a special place called "Kite island" which is where GreenHat hosts kiteboarding lessons.
The island is in the middle of a bay, about 50 yards in diameter and we were the only people on it. It is a sweet place to ride, nice flat water and only waist deep.
After a full day's riding we did a three-mile downwinder from the island to the mainland.
Friday, June 22, 2007: Sandy Hook
A few days later, we had our demo with them at a place called "Sandy Hook", which not surprising because the geography is exactly how it sounds. It has sandy beaches and is shaped like hook. Sandy Hook has a unique backdrop of New York City and we were able to pick out the Empire State Building while riding on the water.

Both Best and Green Hat had put a lot of effort in to ensuring a successful couple of days demoing by putting the word out on each company's forum Best Kiteboarding Forum and NorthEast Wind Forum and we had a great turnout with lots of great people...

Like Michael Bigger ("MBIGGER" on the forum) ...
and media too!
Later that evening, we hosted a BBQ along with GreenHat. It was our way of saying "THANK YOU" to everyone who came out to help make our New Jersey demo a success!
