After returning home to Buffalo, I missed RV life so much that I decided to jump back on and continue touring with Miguel though the summer. We met back up in Chicago and continued on to Alexandria, MN, to meet up with Jason Lybeck from The Faction Board Shop.

Minnesota is known as the Land of 10,000 Lakes, and in the summer, watersports are quite popular here. Kiteboarding is still fairly underground, but it won’t be long before Jason and his crew change that. So, we spent the first day exploring the nearby lakes and listening to tales of kitemare after kitemare. We assured them the sport doesn’t have to be so painful, and that we’d get them riding a bit safer before we leave!

We awoke the next day to gusty winds howling through the trees at about 15-30 knots. We headed to the closest lake and set up the vehicles for a short downwinder. This spot proved to be much too gusty and not ideal for launching. We needed to find them a better location.

Later that day we took the trainer kites to an open field where we showed some of the guys the principals of flying a power kite.

Unbeknownst to us, a local TV station, KNOP TV 2 heard that we were in town and came to interview us!

So, what else could we do but break out the mountain board, which neither of us had ridden before! After the film crew captured us recieving a few grassburns and a few of our sketchy tumbles and on video, we decided to head back to the water.

Check out the interview here… The KNOP TV Interview!.

We pulled up to Lake Minnewasco and found this to be the best location in the area for clean wind, and safe launching.

Here we learned a local phrase called, “Pullin a Drummend” which involves a kitemare of mammoth proportions consisting of about 5 kiteloops while heading straight for a dock, and then thankfully regaining control.

Hopefully after our visit, this won’t be such a common occurance for these guys. It was great to see such a determined and entusiastic group of guys who are pushing kiteboarding in this area.

Until next time....
