Green Hat Kiteboarding - Kite Island, Barnegat Bay, New Jersey
Location

Few years ago, using a satellite map, we found a little sandy island in the middle of Barnegat Bay near the north tip of Long Beach Island (LBI). This island is truly an amazing kiteboarding location – flat, clear, waist deep water for miles, no obstacles or dangers of any kind, and consistent winds in most directions. In other words, it is a kiteboarding paradise. Since boat or PWC is required to get there, the spot never gets crowded which makes it perfect for learning. Best of all, it’s only 1.5 hours away from New York City and Philadelphia. Many people are pleasantly surprised when they realize that kiting conditions in New Jersey can rival those of Cape Hatteras (minus the long drive). All the locals here are very friendly and will always help out other kiters.

Season

Our teaching season is usually April through October. Barnegat Bay gets on average 4 to 5 windy days per week in June/July - peak season. The best wind direction is South to Southwest when the thermal component kicks in, but other wind directions also work well.

With enough neoprene, kiteboarding in NJ is possible year round. However, due to increased risks in cold temperatures, we do not provide beginner water lessons in the winter time. During off-season months, Green Hat Kiteboarding still offers demos as well as private water and land lessons.

Lesson Plan:

In order to provide our clients with the most efficient and best value learning experience, we split our Beginner lesson in 2 parts. First part involves learning theory and kite controls. Since it is completely safe and does not require an instructor, we provide it in form of homework - an "Intro Package" which includes an instructional DVD and a trainer kite could be purchased from our website ( greenhatkiteboarding.com). Second part of our Beginner lesson program is a private or semi-private lesson with a goal to achieve a successful water start by the end of the first day. This lesson consists of a series of exercises designed to develop muscle memory and skills needed to become an independent kiteboarder. Following the Beginner lesson, we provide Supervised Riding sessions where new kiteboarders work on improving their skills in a safe and supervised environment.

In addition to the Beginner program, Green Hat Kiteboarding also provides private advanced lessons where already proficient riders can learn how to jump, do back rolls, front rolls, as well as start with unhooked tricks and throw their first kite loops.

All of our lessons are taught using radio helmets as well as the latest models of Best kites and boards.

Other Services:

Green Hat Kiteboarding stocks a lot of demo gear including all the new Best kites, boards, and harnesses. We offer free Demos (with a purchase of a new kite or board - deposit is required) which include transportation to the "Kite Island" for a day as well as trying all the latest gear.

Why choose us (summary):

- Location is probably the biggest factor in successful learning process and our location is as good as it gets
- Both IKO and PASA certified instructors
- Very high success ratio

- Use of radio helmets and Best gear for all our lessons
