Tuesday 27th March – WELCOME BACK, RV FANS. Today Gavin our photographer and soon to be RV captain and myself set off from Florida to join back up with the bus, to drive it around the US and A. Upon our arrival Buck Ashcraft picked us up from Corpus Christi airport, with the air horns blasting. HI BUS!
Later on that day we went kiting in Packery Channel by Buck’s house. The water was butter flat and we flew 9m’s fully lit. It’s great to be back in Texas, sun, wind and BUTTER water!
Wednesday 28th March– Today we woke early to 25 knots of wind shaking the house. We couldn’t get to the beach fast enough. Today we decided to go to the beach on the East side of Padre Island. The waves were reasonable and the wind was perfect. Buck took his surfboard out and slashed some waves apart. I stuck on a twin tip and managed to ride some nice sets. It was a blast.
We finished up early so we could get the bus set up. This evening, a new rider from the UK, Jim Rawlinson, flew out to meet us. He was pretty beat when he showed up at 11pm, so we grabbed some food and drink and chilled out at Bucky’s.
Friday 29th March – We woke early, 6AM EARLY! Too early for me. We drove all day, 14 hours in total. We made it nearly to El Paso on the border of New Mexico before we called it a day. Our cuisine consisted of super noodles and Twinkies. We refreshed on the rules of Poker before we hit our beds, Gavin is now a whole $10 richer.
Saturday 30th March – We stopped by our great Best friend Carmen’s house today on the way through Las Cruses in New Mexico. Jim and I took the perfect opportunity to use her hot tub, while Gavin had the first WARM shower of the trip, very nice! Thanks Carmen for the stop, and we will see you again in a few weeks! We drove all day again, with another stop in the middle of no where.
We had actually stopped along the famous Route 66, at a random bar, with fairy lights and tacky neon signs. We were all sketched out at first. Big guys in tank tops with sleeves of tattoos. Word soon got round that a huge RV covered in the biggest decal in the world was parked outside, and we quickly became rock stars. I must have handed out at least 15 Best t-shirts, while Gavin and Jim signed the posters already at the bar. IT WAS CRAZY! We must not have spent more than $15 between us, it was a funny night!
Sunday 31st March– Today was one of the most amazing days I have ever experienced. We woke up and headed through the Painted Desert in Arizona early on in the morning. Our first stop around lunch time was the Petrified Forest which had some preserved trees that had crystallised. The rock was incredible, and the bus looked great next to them!
We headed through the state to Flagstaff and took the North Bound route to the Grand Canyon. The pictures can describe it better than this text for sure!
After heading back to the interstate, we crossed the Hoover Dam around midnight before finally arriving at Primm, just outside Las Vegas at around 2am. This was our stop for the NABX land kiting games.
